How To Handle Stress And Anxiety From Work

Everyone deals with stress at work.  Either from customers, co-workers, bosses, deadlines, problem solving, working overtime, the list can go on and on.  When we are stressed (bad stress) it can cause us to have anxiety, become emotional, muscle tension, ulcers, high blood pressure, skin problems, headaches and even subluxations of the spine (which can put pressure on nerves).  So what are some things we can do when we get stressed out at work that will help reduce stress levels and anxiety?

One of the easiest things to do is breathe.  Excuse yourself from the situation (even if you have to go to the bathroom), close your eyes and take 5-10 really deep breaths.  This will allow you to release some of the stress and come back with a clearer head.  Another tip to help reduce stress is to engage your sense of smell with some essential oils.   Essential oils are aromatic compounds found in seeds, bark, roots, flowers, stems and other parts of plants.  Many scents such as lavender, sandalwood and orange can trigger the olfactory nerve and limbic system.  The olfactory nerve is connected to our emotional part of our brain and the limbic system controls heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, mood, stress and hormonal balance.

You’ve heard the saying “you are what you eat”?  This couldn’t be further from the truth and there are foods you can eat which will help to better equip us when stressful work situations arise.  When we are encountered with stress our bodies release three primary stress hormones: adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine.  These hormones cause our bodies to increase levels of blood sugar to feed our brain, muscles and heart… then we crash and need nourishment.  Choose foods that are healthy for you and stay away from fried foods, sugar or even coffee.  Packing food at home and taking it to work can ensure you have what you need.

If you continue to deal with stress and anxiety I would also recommend some self love and getting bodywork such as massage or chiropractic adjustments with your local San Diego Chiropractor.  Many San Diego Chiropractors office offer a variety of holistic wellness options and see levels of stress reduced with clients who take time to give themselves some self love.  Stress is going to arise continuously throughout your life taking steps to prepare yourself can ensure stress and anxiety levels stay low!
